Party season
Jul. 2nd, 2005 08:53 pmFor my social circle, summer is the time of too many parties. We have the Vanguard party on the first Saturday of every month, about to celebrate its 25th anniversary next month. We have a party every Friday night for six weeks in support of the Clarion West writers workshop, the second of which took place at my house last night. Because
akirlu is an insatiable social butterfly, we have a mid-month gathering, Fans With Beers. And then there's spontaneity, if there's any weekend time not already rigorously scheduled for having too much fun. We all get very tired, but somehow we manage to stagger through it all.
Our party last night was a big success. The folly turned out fine. Glenn and I had finished putting the framework in place, just barely, when the first guests arrived, and we were able to get several members of the Clarion West class and other guests to put up the cloth roof, mosquito netting, and goofy lights. Syne Mitchell, who had met with the class earlier that day, said that having something obviously helpful to do worked as a great icebreaker. I usually feel that way when a host asked me to do something that I think I can do, but I'm never sure that other people will feel the same way. The most major thing we've ever asked a guest to do was to help put up a ceiling, which
brisingamen cheerfully did during her TAFF trip before we let her go to bed.

And as we'd not, I think, previously met at that point, definitely a great ice-breaker. How can one be stiff and shy with people when one has built bits of house with them?
Here, when we have visitors, I'm always glad when people want to get involved in whatever project is going on while they're around; feels kind of homely.
