Glenn and I are using a French phrase-a-day calendar this year. I don't think we've mastered much French in the process, since we don't practice, but some phrases have entered our everyday vocabulary. The most vivid is, "J'ai le cafard," which colloquially means, "I'm feeling down," but literally means, "I've got the roach."

I go back and forth between thinking that the roach must be a literal cockroach, and thinking that it must be marijuana (I can't even think of what one would call a marijuana cigarette other than a roach. Surely, no one outside of law enforcement ever calls it a marijuana cigarette without feeling like a fool?).

My other favorite phrase so far is, "Est-ce que tu fais la grasse matinée le dimanche?" ("Do you sleep in on Sundays?" or literally, "Do you make the greasy morning on Sunday?").
