Fabric stash
Jul. 24th, 2019 05:47 pmI sew. I sew a lot. I sew somewhat less than I used to. I have always bought fabric for projects that I expected to do, and I have always planned to do more projects than I could reasonably expect to get around to doing.
In addition to the fabric I have bought, I've been given fabric from other sewers' stashes, when they stopped sewing for some reason, or changed their sewing focus, or died. In turn, I've passed a lot of my inherited fabric along to other sewers. I've given a lot to the apparel design program at Seattle Central College and even more to a small theater program.
I still have a lot more fabric than I will get around to using.
Today, I started cutting out fabric I bought a year ago to make a jacket. This will be a really simple unlined jacket. If I have the energy, it shouldn't take more than a day's sewing to finish. I don't have a whole bunch of energy right now, so that day's worth of sewing will happen across multiple days. I also put together a small pile of fabrics to make a somewhat more elaborate pieced jacket, which should take about two days' worth of sewing. That pile includes some fabric I bought at a store that went out of business more than twenty years ago. I don't think any of the fabrics in the pile have been in my stash for under ten years.
I think I need to say goodbye to more fabric, more often, going forward. I need to use up the fabric I already have. There's a saying among certain rabid sewers: She who dies with the most fabric, wins. I don't think having a huge stash of unsewn fabric when I die would constitute a win.
