I learned yesterday that a beloved teacher from my youth died in May. Katharine Born McClure, Mrs. McClure to me while I was a student, Katie thereafter, graduated from Columbus School for Girls the year before my father was born, and returned to it as teacher, Assistant Headmistress, major volunteer. I last saw her seven years ago at my 25th reunion, when she was 89. She went to all the reunions as a volunteer; she gave me my name badge. I'm sure she remembered every girl who ever went to that school, including the ones who attended before she was born.
She was a tiny lady, carefully dressed, with impeccable, gentle manners. She was always kind; she was always smart.. She should have been the headmistress rather than the assistant, but during the fifties and sixties, the trustees hired men to head the school. She didn't seem to mind not being head; perhaps someone knows for sure what she thought about it, but certainly the girls never would.
Rest well, Katie McClure. You worked gracefully and hard all your life. You were loved, and you'll be remembered.
