Earlier this evening, I was explaining a dirty joke to an 89-year-old man. I thought a) this is not a problem, as long as one has the right 89-year-old man; b) most 89-year-old men have forgotten more dirty jokes than I have ever heard; and c) okay, I'll have another stout.

I am slightly dizzy at the idea that he really is 89 years old.

Yeah. When I met him, he looked a bit old for a guy in his sixties. Now, he looks pretty much the same, and very young and spry indeed for a guy one year short of ninety.

I wish I could remember to speak up and always speak directly at him when I'm talking to him; it's a courtesy I need to practice more carefully.

I was glad you sat next to him, though, because you were more attentive to that than I would likely have been.
