Thanks for Your Generous Response to CW Dorm Burglary

Due to the swift and generous response of the SF community, Clarion West has now received nearly enough money to replace the four student laptops stolen July 4 from rooms at the workshop residence. Clarion West staff, volunteers, and students all express their thanks for your very timely help. They especially want to thank BoingBoing, Cory Doctorow, Jay Lake, and many more for their generosity and for alerting others to the need for money and laptops. Donations began coming in from around the world just hours after the theft.

“If we collect funds that are much in excess of the cost of replacing the stolen computers, we will return them proportionally to the donors,” said workshop administrator Leslie Howle. “The use of PayPal makes this relatively easy to do.” She added, “We are all overwhelmed, and the students are immensely grateful. They were devastated by this theft, and it’s been amazing to see the community rally to support them.”

I kind of noticed the original message, appalled, when it first popped out on my friends list - and was appalled. I had every intention of posting a pass-along message... but things got away from me a tad this weekend, it being my birthday on Saturday and all and various events which meant not-being-at-computer intervened somewhat.

And then you, with this.

It looks like the situation is well in hand, ant that the workshop has been rescued from the brink of disaster. I'm amazed at the way, and the speed, with which the blogosphere disseminated the news and then at the way the issue was swiftly and uncompromisingly addressed. If this year's students take nothing else away from their Clarion experience they will have learned what a thoroughly cool and wonderful community they can claim to be a part of.

Kudos to all who rallied to the flag, my condolences to the victims of the crime, my best wishes for the rest of Clarion, and I hope some REALLY bad karma comes around for the bastards who pilfered the computers in the first place.

Thanks so much. We're pretty sure the laptops and software are covered now.

I didn't even post the original notice. The theft happened on Friday, when I was busy with out-of-town visitors from two different branches of my family. Other people did all the work of spreading the word and raising the money. I'll only have to do the much more pleasant work of thanking the donors for their generosity.
