Not a whole lot of stuff in particular

kate_schaeferYesterday I had Anita and Jack's grandson R---- over for a few hours (in Anita's online writing, she has always referred to minors by first initial followed by dashes, giving those entries a Victorian look). R---- is a fun kid to have around; so far, he's marginally better behaved than our grandchildren, probably because kids in general are better behaved for adults who aren't their personal adults. He's fascinated with Glenn's K'nex, and even more fascinated with the Brio trains we keep here for our grandson. Last time R---- was here, so was M--, and M-- was very possessive about the trains. R---- enjoyed being able to have his way with the trains without interference from the older child.
We're getting ready for a big trip to Alaska to see Glenn's parents, a long enough trip that we're having a housesitter rather than just asking Jane to stop by and take in the mail. Glenn grew up in Alaska, and Ruth and Mary lived there for a few years when they were small. The grandchildren are very excited about going. The oldest granddaughter has asked me many times over the past several months if I've ever been to Alaska. No, I say. Good, she says. I won't be the only one on the trip who's never been to Alaska before.
There are eight of us going, of whom three have been to Alaska before. You do the math.
In preparation, we're doing all sorts of stuff: replacing tires and radio on the van, checking the van's screens to see if they're still usable (no), ditto the curtains we acquired from someone with the same model van (yes), airing the tents, reworking Mary and Shandra's roof box so it will work on the van, clearing out enough space for the housesitter to live in. Clearing out enough space? Waaagh. This is harder than clearing out space for a houseguest, because the housesitter will be here for a lot longer and bring a lot more stuff.
