I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska, having a good time. Glaciers, mountains, northern lights, sandhill cranes, moose, moose, moose, moose, moose, hot springs, relatives, yaks.

I'm also sitting in the lobby of the hotel, listening to the updates on hurricane Katrina and wondering just where in the Gulf of Mexico my sister and her spouse are, but not worrying about them. We always knew New Orleans was a temporary city; I hope its run isn't over for good now.

Ah... glaciers. Do you go around picking up rocks and stuffing them in your pockets, or are you more a person to leave the rocks where they lie?

Depends on context and size of rock. I don't pick up as many rocks as glaciers do, nor do I carry them along and drop them wherever I feel like it the way they do. This trip, the only rocks I've picked up have been the ones I've skipped across lakes and rivers.

Right now we're in Fort St. John, British Columbia, doing laundry and checking email before falling over. We traveled about 400 miles in about 9 hours today, with much the same the day before and much the same tomorrow.

Moose, yaks and relatives are OK. But watch out for the head squid while you're up there!

You know I have never seen a live moose in person. Buffalo, and assorted deer like creatures, but not moose. And Yaks! Very cool. Pictures when you get back?

Pictures when we get back, you betcha. Yesterday: four bears (three grizzly, one black). Today: four caribou, several deer. Was the most recent moose yesterday or today? I forget. It's written down somewhere.

Last night's northern lights were the best so far.

Wow, that's a lot of bear. And wildlife in general. And I saw northern lights once in Seattle, in October. Never saw them again. I'd go on that trip just to see those lights. Cool.
