Corflu Stu
May. 4th, 2013 01:52 pmI'm at Corflu. Stu Shiffman is not at Corflu. I want to put together a one-shot fanzine for Stu, written here. I've promised to write an article for that one-shot before midnight tonight. I'm also going to ask people who make Corflu-related LJ entries (like this one by Kate Yule) if I can scarf those entries for this purpose, to give Stu a composite flavor of the convention.
Friends of Stu, are you with me? You don't have to be at Corflu to participate.
For this purpose, short is better than long, and done is better than perfect. Unlike one-shots of the far-distant past, this need not be composed continuously on a beer-spattered typewriter in the consuite. You can email me your contribution or post it as a comment to this entry or hand it to me in the hall late this evening.
And thanks!

Date: 2013-05-05 05:39 am (UTC)"Shiffman, whatever is wrong?" she asked.
"This makes no sense," Shiffman muttered. "They call this gathering 'Corflu,' and yet nowhere, nowhere do I see or smell any trace of correction fluid. Not a mimeograph is to be found. Nay, not even a stencil. Have we come to the wrong conclave?"
Dr. Watson immediately picked up her companion's gloom. "Yes," she said. "Everyone is gathered around these strange boxes and flat objects which emit light. No one is pubbing their ish. Shiffman, once again you have put your finger on a problem I failed to see."
"Go out and procure one of those boxes for me. I must see one for myself."
Dr. Watson left the room and was gone what seemed an interminably long time. Finally she returned with a flat object on her lap.
"Everyone assured me that yes, we were at the right gathering. And people are very protective of their boxes and flat objects. But I finally found one which had been left on a table and was able to grab it before its owner returned."
Shiffman took the box from Watson and examined it. At first, he was daunted by the requirement for a "password," but he deduced the right combination of numbers in short order. After a few additional minutes, his face cleared with an uncharacteristic smile.
"Ahh, Watson, all is in order."
"Shiffman, what have you discovered?"
"You see, Watson, but you do not observe. These flat objects are replacements for mimeograph machines and stencils and correction fluid. One can pub one's ish directly into this contraption and convey it to readers. Look, here is Banana Wings. And here is Chunga.
"Amazing, Shiffman! Perhaps we should acquire one of these gadgets for ourselves."
"Yes, I think we must. Clearly, a new day of fanzines has dawned, and we are already behindhand."

Date: 2013-05-05 12:57 pm (UTC)I saw folks working on a laptop in the far parlor during Saturday night's bheer tasting and related festivities. Gary Hunnewell told me he was writing for the one-shot, but it's just now that I see what's up with that. Kate, you rock. Thank you. Stu's art is here, in the pages of fanzines in the flea market and auction, and one or more original(s) in the form of a Corflu name badge he decorated for me that were among the Corflu badges I found the night before flying west. And so, his spirit, just as our spirits are with both Stu and Andi.
