What's blooming in my yard today? Winter honeysuckle, snowdrops, snow crocus, daffodils (both King Alfred and February Gold), regular crocus, alyssum, anemones, dandelions, those little purple weeds whose name I can never remember, and those little white weeds that I think are called don't-touch-me because they shoot their seeds out in a really satisfying yet irritating way when you do, some weeks from now.

My sympathies to everyone under several feet of snow in the east. It's not far in the back of my mind that we may have a drought this summer because we're not building up snowpack in the mountains now, but I'll enjoy this spring while it happens.

I was marveling at all the flowering trees we have right now, along with daffodils and other really clearly spring flowers. In mid-Februrary. I could never live with the snow Massachusetts is getting right now.

Ohio, land of my birth, is under a lot of snow right now, as are several states considerably farther south where by rights they should have just a sprinkling that melts by afternoon.

Meanwhile, I also have pansies and grape hyacinths and quince and primroses. The pansies, quince, and primroses would normally bloom now; the grape hyacinths shouldn't happen for a few more weeks.

I was over the mountains this weekend, and the lack of snow there is both amazing and appalling. This morning I saw both cherry trees and daffodils blooming. And today is . . .?

Yes, amazing and appalling is precisely right.

My daffodils haven't bloomed yet, although they're on the verge. The grape hyacinth hasn't bloomed yet either. Your microclimate is clearly warmer than mine!

You have to squint to see the blooming grape hyacinths in my microclimate. Squint, or get down on your hands and knees in weeding position. I know you spend a fair amount of time in that position yourself.

The bees are active, too.

Sounds lovely indeed. Sigh.

Well, with our winter we don't have to worry about drought, so I'll try to keep a lid on my whining. Also, it's good for killing breeding mosquitoes.

Still, flowers . . . .

Love, C.

That's it, brag about your water.

I know you're teasing me, which is cool. :)

What climate change isn't affecting, the frackers are determined to toxify though. The frackers have been fighting to get hold of our region's watershed for years -- despite the proof of what it's doing to my birth state's water table, and despite the proof that oil is Going Out, at least as fuel.

Love, C.

Our wind-chill is zero (Farenheit), declining steadily toward -24 dawn Thursday.
I really don't want to hear about your *&^%$#@! flowers. I still can go walk onto one fifth of the world's fresh water, so there.

As I said to Constance, go ahead, brag about your water. We may be hurting come summer.
